Chassiron Lighthouse
Poitou-Charentes (France)

The lighthouse is throughout the year. The base of the tower houses a little museum about the lighthouse itself. The first lighthouse here was lit in 1685 and guided shipping for over 150 years. Then in 1836 they built the lighthouse that stands here and is in use today.
Original the lighthouse was painted in white. But bad weather in daylight made it difficult to tell this lighthouse from the lighthouse of phare des baleines. In 1905 tragedy struck; together with complaints from mariners it was decided to paint the lighthouse in white and black. This happened in 1925.

la Coubre Lighthouse
Poitou-Charentes (France)

During the 19th century they built several lights but they always were destroyed by the sea. In 1905 the first lighthouse was in use. This lighthouse was built over 2 km from the sea. But due to tidal erosion it is now at only 100m from the sea. At the foot of the lighthouse there is an eco-museum about the history of the lighthouses of the Gironde.
